Children can be registered as British citizens and adults can apply for naturalisation.

Individuals who have Indefinite Leave to Remain can apply for nationality subject to the terms and conditions which must be satisfied before an application can be submitted. In particular it is now necessary to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the language and life in the United Kingdom and to be of good character. This can be done by taking a test or by undertaking a course of study. Naturalisation also takes place at a public ceremony. Once naturalization has been obtained, a foreign national can automatically be eligible for a British passport.
